The General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) is the first legal basis for the processing of personal data directly applicable in all EU Member States. It was adopted in April 2016 after a three-year voting process and replaces the 1995 Data Protection Directive.

Among the new features are the rights to data transferability and forgetting.
